BLOG: Nick O'Meally on filming 'Bear Grylls' Breaking Point'
In 2017 I was asked by Betty TV to Series Direct 3 x 1hr programmes for Discovery called 'Breaking Point'. In the series Bear Grylls takes members of the public to extreme mountain locations to help them challenge their phobias, little did I know it would push me to face one of my own genuine fears too.
I was actually very nervous about filming underground. I've never been a fan of confined spaces and taking two people with claustrophobia, caused by traumatic experiences underground into a pothole in the depths of the Dolomites in Italy was not something I was looking forward to.
So there I was directing Bear Grylls, one of the toughest men on the planet, squeezing a full film crew through 2 foot holes where you couldn't turn around, crawling through underground streams knowing that at any moment the contributors could freak out in the inky darkness.
I really had to push myself beyond one of my genuine fears to make that episode. Probably wouldn't do it again though...
